The Right Way to Descale a Kettle or Coffee Maker (and How Often)
Limescale — the chalky white buildup inside kettles and coffee makers — is simply dissolved minerals (mostly calcium and magnesium) left behind as water heats and evaporates. How much you get, and how often you actually need to deal with it, depends heavily on something most people never check: their local water hardness.
Why "how often" isn't the same for everyone
Water hardness varies enormously by region, and it's usually public information — your local water utility publishes it, often in parts per million (ppm) or grains per gallon. In genuinely soft-water areas, a kettle might go 6+ months with barely visible buildup. In hard-water areas, visible scale can appear within 2–3 weeks. This is why generic advice like "descale monthly" is often wrong in both directions — it's either overkill or not nearly enough depending on where you live.
The actual descaling process
Both white vinegar and citric acid work by the same mechanism: their acidity dissolves the calcium carbonate in limescale. Citric acid (available as a powder) is generally preferred for coffee makers specifically because it leaves less residual smell and taste than vinegar, which can require several rinse cycles to fully clear.
For a kettle: fill with a 1:1 mixture of water and white vinegar (or a citric acid solution per its packaging instructions), bring to a boil, then let it sit for 15–20 minutes. Empty, rinse thoroughly, and boil a full cycle of plain water afterward — discard that water rather than using it for a drink, since it will still carry some residual taste.
For a drip coffee maker: run a brew cycle with the same 1:1 vinegar-water mixture (or citric acid solution) in the reservoir with no coffee grounds, let it sit in the carafe for 15 minutes, then run two full cycles of plain water afterward to clear any residual taste before brewing coffee again.
What doesn't need descaling as urgently as people assume
Electric kettles used only for boiling water (not coffee makers) are more forgiving of infrequent descaling from a taste perspective, since you're less likely to notice a subtle mineral taste in plain boiled water used for tea versus coffee. That said, heavy scale buildup does eventually reduce heating efficiency and can shorten the appliance's lifespan regardless of whether you notice a taste difference — so "I can't taste it" isn't the same as "it doesn't matter."
